11 SEPTEMBER 00
RG wins UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) logging contract.

Robertson Geologging was recently awarded a two-year term contract to provide contract logging services as part of the decommissioning of the UKAEA nuclear facility at Dounreay in Scotland. The contract was won following a pan European-Community tender. The logging services to be provided will include the latest optical (OPTV) and acoustic (BHTV) imaging logs to study fractures and faulting in the underlying lacustrine sedimentary deposits. Conventional logs including nuclear, resistivity and acoustic will also be run.

The contract is the latest of several awarded to RG for nuclear site logging investigations by clients including ANDRA (France), POSIVA (Finland), ENDRESA (Spain) and UK NIREX. The experience of RG, backed by a quality assurance programme certified as meeting the requirements of ISO-EN 9001, is available for logging service contracts worldwide.

VIDEOLOGGER2 IS BORN

The RG Videologger2 integrated digital logging and CCTV system has undergone a transformation. Now lighter in weight by 7kg, it includes a host of new features including dual high capacity drives (640MB MO drive option), SCSI interface, 400MHz processor and high brightness screen. The Videologger2 directly supports all RG digital logging probes and TV cameras. External ‘pods’ can be daisy-chained to the RS485 interface to support many Century, Mount Sopris, Auslog, MLS and analog probes from other manufacturers as well as Laval and Hytec cameras. The Videologger comes with the latest v254 release of ‘Winlogger’ acquisition software, which now includes many new features to aid log presentation and reporting, often replacing the need for expensive 3rd-party ‘processing’ packages.

OPTICAL TELEVIEWER FINDS 5th GEAR
The advantage of high resolution imaging obtained by optical imaging probes is frequently offset by an unacceptably low logging speed (0.8m/min using 1mm resolution in the case of one competitor’s probe). New improvements to the standard RG OPTV using ‘multi-ring’ sampling and high bandwidth data transmission has allowed an increase in logging speed to an acceptable 2.5m/min with 1mm resolution, even on cable lengths approaching 5000feet. A further benefit is that real time video is available to aid probe setup - an essential feature in deviated or rugose boreholes. The probe can also be converted into a standard CCTV camera using an interchangeable bottom end and external lighthead for ‘quick-look’ surveys to select zones of interest for the OPTV.

RG SIGNS MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY DEVELOPMENT DEAL WITH BARTINGTON INSTRUMENTS

The Bartington BSS-02A borehole magnetic susceptibility system has become the industry standard, offering a wide range (10-5 to 10-1cgs) measurement at low frequency (1.439kHz) and with good vertical resolution (25mm) from a dual-coil system. The temperature stability is excellent with drift of less than +/- 20 x 10-5cgs over the 0° to 100°C calibrated temperature range. Bartington Instruments Ltd. has recently signed an exclusive design and marketing arrangement with RG for a new digital version, the BSS-02B, which requires no separate surface panel and is directly compatible with RG digital surface systems.

RG TAKES OVER OYO PRODUCT LINES IN USA AND AUSTRALIA

RG has recently concluded an arrangement to market product lines of OYO Instruments (Japan). These include:

  • Suspension PS logger: non-clamping borehole system for shear and compressional velocity measurements using unique high power borehole source. Call by our stand for applications summary and field case study.
  • McSeis SX: lightweight 48 channel seismograph for geo-engineering applications
  • McOHM-EL: surface resistivity meter which also supports some basic borehole measurements.

RG ACHIEVES ISO 9001 ACCREDITATION

borehole logging iso 9001

RG recently became the first slimhole logging equipment manufacturer in the world to achieve ISO 9001 (EN ISO 9001) approval for quality management systems throughout its design, manufacturing, sales and contract service operations. This prestigious award, granted after an in-depth inspection by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Ltd. (LRQA), is an assurance to customers that the company conforms to documented quality control procedures appropriate to this industry.

Periodic inspections by LRQA will ensure that these high standards are maintained in the future.

NEW IMAGING SOFTWARE FROM GMI

We are pleased to announce the conclusion of an agreement for technical development and marketing between GeoMechanics International (GMI) and our parent company, OYO Corporation. This agreement covers further enhancement of the industry-standard GMI Imager software to meet the specific requirements of geotechnical and site investigations. The new software will be bundled with the Optical Televiewer and Borehole Acoustic Televiewer probes marketed by Robertson Geologging Ltd. GMI Imager, developed by GMI founder and consulting former associate professor at Stanford University, Colleen Barton, is the result of over ten years of research, development and successful application of wellbore image analysis. It can be applied to optical and acoustic wellbore image data to determine the distribution, orientation and apparent aperture of natural fracture and fault systems and to classify and to distinguish such features from sedimentary structures. It can also be used to enhance and to correct wellbore image data, to re-scale and to plot image logs and to determine the orientation and distribution of compressive, tensile and shear-induced wellbore failures.

The user interface has been designed to be intuitive and easy to use. It includes a comprehensive set of sophisticated interactive measurement tools and the ability easily to classify and to describe features observed in these logs. All of the image projections and data analysis views may be printed or saved as JPEG files for report preparation.

OPTICAL TELEVIEWER IMAGING PROBE
optical

Designed for high-resolution in air or water-filled boreholes, the optical televiewer is the ideal probe for fracture studies. Using a unique hyperbolic mirror system, the probe provides a continuous orientated 360 degree image of the borehole wall unwrapped by projection onto a flat plane.

The image is displayed in real time on the standard RG VideoLogger surface system and is recorded for subsequent processing using the RG-Dip software. Processing options which are available include manual or semi-automatic feature picking, fracture and bedding orientation, dip-arrow plots, stereograms and projection of features onto a hypothetical core model.

The optical televiewer probe is directly compatible with standard RG winches and cables and the RG-VideoLogger surface system.
