RG Slim-Hole Full-Waveform Sonic Probe

Slim-Hole Full-Waveform Sonic Probe

The slim-hole sonic probe is a single-transmitter,
dual-receiver tool that operates in compressional,
full-wave and cement-bond log (CBL) modes. This sonic probe is unusual in that it is of rigid construction, allowing it to be centralised effectively even in highly deviated or horizontal boreholes such as those drilled for engineering purposes. The probe is constructed in three sections that separate for ease of shipping.

PRINCIPLE OF MEASUREMENT
The piezoelectric transmitter is stimulated by a
high-voltage pulse and radiates a high-frequency sonic wave through the borehole fluid and formation to a receiver. An accurate quartz clock measures the first arrival transit time.
Compensated sonic mode:
Both receivers are used. The probe measures the velocity of the first compressional arrival. Use of two receivers allows cancellation of the borehole fluid path and determination of formation velocity.
Full waveform sonic mode:
The probe records the full sonic wave-train at both receivers simultaneously and also the velocity of the first arrival
Cement-bond log (CBL) mode:
The probe records the amplitude and arrival time of the first casing arrival at the lower receiver and full wave-trains at both receivers.
